Andrew Capelin

Principal Director

Andrew Capelin is the Principal of Capelin Law; he is a lawyer, mediator and collaborative practitioner with over 25 years of experience in legal practice and business. Capelin Law is built on the belief in making every effort to help people resolve their issues without using a court. This approach is faster, cheaper and less stressful. Therefore we believe it is just a better way of doing things.

Andrew practiced as a barrister for about 10 years which makes him very competent and confident in a courtroom! Ironically, Andrew now handles very few litigation matters these days, preferring to focus on helping families resolve their issues collaboratively.

Consequently, Andrew finds collaborative practice to be a very fulfilling part of the work that he does and is passionate in his belief that it gives better outcomes for families.

Andrew’s other passion is playing golf.

Amy Mao

Senior Paralegal

Amy Mao is a senior paralegal at Capelin Law. Prior to joining Capelin Law, Amy worked at one of Australia’s largest specialist family law firms helping clients with their separation, parenting and property matters. Amy has worked exclusively in the family law jurisdiction since 2015 and is currently studying law.

Amy adopts a humanitarian approach to clients, recognising the complexity of each family and their individual pain points. As a single parent having undergone her own separation, Amy is keenly aware of the protracted nature of family law litigation, and the emotional toll this can take on clients, particularly when children are involved.

Amy is committed to ensuring that the assistance she provides her clients gives their families the best possible platform on which they can move on with their lives. With a passion for collaborative family law, she believes in creating practical and sustainable settlements which meet both the immediate and long term needs of her clients.

Amy is involved with various not-for-profit organisations such as Redfern Legal Centre, Sydney Downing Centre’s Women’s Domestic Violence Court Advocacy Service, Justice Connect and is an association member of Family Law Section – Law Council of Australia, Women Lawyers Association of NSW and the Australian Institute of Family Law Arbitrators and Mediators.

In her spare time, Amy enjoys spending time with her 3-year-old Amelia. Amy survived the terrible 3s and has Amelia to thank for her new found professional skills in conflict resolution and negotiation with difficult personalities.
